Patang ( The Kile ), as the name indicates moves on varied yet parallel strands. There is a plot, there are sub-plots and episodes which finally weave into the texture of the film.
On the first strand we have Manpur which is a one-horse railway station near Gaya. Patang deals mainly with the inter-play of human emotions of the people who exist on the periphery of railway crimes. The trains, the wagons and the pilferages form the backdrop of the relationship of the people who live in the bustec. In the backdrop we have the heath constantly reminding one of the futility of life and its struggle.
Our protagonist Somra, son of Jitni, obsessed with kites is a direct by-product of the social order obtaining around him. In Mathura we have a classic example of a petty criminal trying to make it big in the ambience around. The relationship of Mathura and Jitni, clandestine yet understood and accepted, is a counterpoint to point out the reality obtaining around in the area.
